Prof. Dr. Schlegel is Of Counsel at Dierks+Company.

He is regarded as one of Germany's leading experts in social and healthcare law. He also has extensive expertise in the area of compulsory insurance, for example in status determination procedures and other status issues. He has an excellent network in the healthcare sector thanks to his many years of work at the Federal Social Court.

Prior to joining Dierks+Company, Prof. Dr. Schlegel has been a judge at the Federal Social Court since 1997 and was appointed presiding judge in 2008. From 2010 to the end of 2013, he headed the Labour Law and Occupational Health and Safety Department at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. After returning to the Federal Social Court, he was first appointed Vice President and then President in October 2016. He remained in office until February 2024.

Prof. Dr. Schlegel is a renowned editor and author of numerous commentaries on social law. He also acts as editor and publisher of several specialist journals in the field of social law and social jurisdiction. He is an honorary professor of social law at Justus Liebig University Giessen.
